Why do Spanish suppliers reject passports?
If you've just moved to Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, or anywhere else), you've probably realized that Spanish bureaucracy revolves around the NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero).
The "Octopus Energy" Problem
Many expats try to sign up with modern suppliers like Octopus Energy, only to be told halfway through the process: "We cannot accept a passport. You must provide a NIE." The automated online forms of most major companies (Endesa, Iberdrola, Naturgy) are strictly coded to validate Spanish ID formats, leaving foreigners stuck without power.
However, it is completely legal to set up an electricity contract in Spain using only a passport. You just need to know which suppliers have the manual bypass procedures to accept it.

Valid Passport
A clear photo of your passport (all edges visible). No NIE or TIE is required.

Spanish Bank Account
A Spanish IBAN (starting with ES). If you use a neo-bank (N26, Revolut), ensure it provides a Spanish IBAN, otherwise some suppliers may reject the direct debit.

The CUPS Number
This is the unique ID of your electricity meter (starts with ES). Ask your landlord or real estate agent for it. If they don't have it, give us the exact address and we'll find it.

How long does it take?
If the property had power recently, it takes 24 to 48 hours. If it's a brand new building or hasn't had power for years, it can take 5-7 days and requires a Boletín Eléctrico.
Do I need to sign a permanent contract?
No. We only select tariffs with no lock-in periods (sin permanencia). You can change suppliers anytime.
What if I get my NIE later?
Once your NIE arrives, you just send us a photo and we'll update your contract with the supplier automatically.
